Description & Learning objectives

Self-harm has been on the increase for several years. Although a small percentage of individuals try it once and never again, a high percentage of people repeat their self-harming behaviours. It’s a coping strategy which provides a sense of release.

However, this relief doesn’t address the cause of their despair, and the benefits are short-lived. As such, their self-harm actions repeat and tend to increase in both frequency and intensity, sometimes with additional methods. For some people, when their despair continues and self-harm stops providing the release they need, their thoughts may turn to suicide.

Not everyone who considers suicide self-harms first, although many do. Some people see no other way to end their suffering or to prevent horrific things from happening; they consider suicide as their only option. Some people think suicide is a coward’s way out, yet others say they are not brave enough to end their life.

Suicide isn’t about being a coward or about being brave. It’s about feeling desperate, seeing no hope and believing it’s the only way to end their suffering. Ligatures are one method of suicide, and so these three subjects – self-harm, suicide and ligatures – are linked.

  • To understand what self-harm is, why people self-harm, the biology and the myths
  • To understand the definition of suicide, why people do it, and the psychological process
  • To understand what ligatures and ligature points are, how to respond to the use of ligature, and prevention
  • To recognise the signs of self-harm and suicide
  • To explore some ways to help prevent self-harm and suicide
