Description & Learning objectives

To develop a sense of resilience and emotional well-being, children need to be able to manage risks. From a toddler taking their first steps, to a teenager going to a concert, risk taking is part of developing resilience – and helps develop social, emotional and cognitive skills.

Of course, for children in contemporary society, risk covers a great many difficulties – such as online grooming, child sexual exploitation (CSE) or child criminal exploitation (CCE).  So, in encouraging children and young people to take risks and explore new opportunities, carers need to be aware of exposing children to risks that they cannot manage.

Looked-after children are statistically more likely to be exposed to significant risk – with sexual abuse victims being six times more likely to be sexually abused again. There is evidence that children with good caring relationships are more likely to have the ability to manage risks more effectively and gain more insight from experiential learning.

  • To understand what classical risk assessment is
  • To consider the factors that determine risk for children – especially children looked after
  • To recognise a contextual understanding of risk and safeguarding in the contemporary arena
  • To discuss risk management and its importance in developing resilience
  • To think about how carers can manage risky situations with young people
