Description & Learning objectives

Starting by critically reflecting on individual performance, this course aims to empower carers to genuinely put young people at the centre of childcare practice and demonstrates how to embed this in order to maintain improved outcomes. Social Pedagogy is a methodology that has helped drive meaningful change by developing child-centred practice across Europe. Now adopted by some local authorities, it has achieved positive change for many young people in the UK – especially in residential children’s services.

It is based on an academic discipline that draws on core theories from various related disciplines, such as education, sociology, psychology, and philosophy. In essence, it is concerned with well-being, learning, and growth. This is underpinned by person-centred values that view people as active and resourceful individuals, highlights the importance of including them into the wider community, and aims to tackle or prevent social problems and inequality. The Social Care Training Hub has designed this package to introduce and explain this methodology and how it can be applied in a British context. The course will provide professionals with a clear understanding of the benefits of using social pedagogic approaches and how they can achieve the best results for young people.

The main learning objectives of the course are as follows:

  1. To begin the process of using critical reflection as a tool to improve individual performance
  2. To understand how social pedagogy can assist in building holistic, meaningful relationships
  3. To understand what social pedagogy is and how to explore the ways that it is being used to achieve better outcomes
  4. To learn to place child-centred methodologies at the centre of your practice
