Description & Learning objectives

Being a Designated Safeguarding Officer (DSO) is crucial in the looked-after children sector. Your main job is straightforward but vital: correctly implementing safeguarding policies. It’s more than just paperwork; it’s about actively ensuring that children and young people are safe and protected.

As a DSO, you're the point person for safeguarding. You need to identify the signs of abuse or neglect and know what to do next, whether that’s an internal review or contacting external agencies. You set the standard for the appropriate response.

The role is constantly evolving. Laws change, and new challenges emerge, so staying updated is key. Your decisions have a real impact. A wrong move could mean a child remains at risk; the right one could improve a life. That's a big responsibility – it's part of the job. In this sector, there’s no room for error.

We’re dealing with the well-being of young people who rely on those who care for them. As a DSO, you are critical in ensuring safeguarding is a reality, not just a policy. It's a job that requires both know-how and care, and its importance cannot be overstated.
