Description & Learning objectives

An infant is any child under one year old. Babies are known as Newborns or Neonates  for the first month; The World Health Organization (WHO) defines a newborn infant, or neonate, as a child that's under 28 days old;  and then infants until they reach the age of one year when they are generally referred to as toddlers as this is around the age when they begin to walk, or ‘toddle around’.

Between birth and one year Infants grow and develop at an extremely fast rate, and they need a huge amount of physical care.

All children are different and develop at different rates, but the pattern of development should follow the same stages.

Anyone who is involved in working with infants or who  is supporting a young parent should have a good understanding of the stages of development  so that they notice any problems early.

It is also important to know what infants need at each stage e.g., when they should begin sleeping through the night, how much they should be fed,  when to begin weaning, when they should start to roll over, sit up, crawl  and so on.

Meeting their physical care needs is essential but babies also need lots of love, attention and must form close bonds with their primary, and other, care givers in order to feel safe and secure.

  • To identify the stages of development from birth to one year
  • To understand the feeding requirements of babies
  • To know how to take care of babies’ skin, hair and teeth
  • To explore ways to encourage good sleeping habits
  • To consider what clothing is appropriate for infants
